Pilot

When introducing 360-degree feedback it is very important to get commitment from senior management. They are the key influential people whose support will add credibility to your 360-degree feedback initiative.

If possible, make your senior management team the first group to receive 360-degree feedback. Then roll out your 360 to more junior managers.

If participation of your senior management is not possible, pilot 360-degree feedback with another group. Ideally, the pilot group would have a positive attitude to 360-degree feedback and be willing to provide you with their honest feedback about how the whole 360 process worked for them.

By piloting you will:

  • ensure that the questionnaire is valid and effective
  • detect any practical challenges and adjust your 360 process
  • ensure the report is effective

All of the lessons learned through the pilot should be considered, and adjustments should be made to ensure that your next stage of 360s runs smoothly.

BEST PRACTICE

  • Plan to roll out 360s over a period of time
  • Start with a smaller group, preferably the senior team, and roll it out from there

PITFALLS

  • Implementing 360 too broadly and too quickly
  • Lack of senior management commitment and support
